A guide for best practices on setting up your search.

Overall, the best searches on Juicebox use our AI Filters to narrow down a search to the relevant candidate pool of ≈100-2,500 profiles, and then use Criteria to rank those candidates based on experience.

The suggestions below are designed to help with the first step of that process: setting your filters using the “filters” button at any point in time across your search.

Too few profiles.

If your search has too few results, you should first review how many filters you have applied. Keep in mind that adding filters from different sections creates “AND” fields in your search. Some filters may significantly restrict your search.

Your goal should be to have the minimum total number of filters needed for your search.

Trouble shooting guide to expand your search pool:

Skills
Having long skills like “Mobile app performance optimization” (only 17 matches globally!).
Split into “mobile” and “performance optimization.” Juicebox will automatically prioritize profiles who match both.
Location
Some towns/cities may have small talent pools.
Use the radius search to expand to 50 miles, 100 miles, etc.
Years of Experience
A tight range of years of experience, like 3 to 5 years, will massively decrease your number of matches.
Widen the range. For example, 2 to 7 years may be more appropriate.
Specific Past Job Titles
Adding a past job title like “Senior Software Engineer” will restrict your candidate pool.
Consider inserting a shortened version of your past job title or variations like “Engineer” and “Developer” to significantly widen your matches.
Fields of Study
Fields of study can be highly restrictive, especially when selecting just one.
Use the “Ask AI” feature to expand the fields of study, or remove them entirely if not necessary.

Too many profiles.

In most cases, too many results is a good thing, because you’ll be able to use the Autopilot to refine your search further! Generally, most effective searches use the Autopilot for the final review step, highlighting just the top profile matches.

For the ranking of the results to be strong, consider adding a few skills or keywords in the “Skills / Keywords” field. This will have a major impact on search ranking, surfacing top matches more easily. The Autopilot can then be particularly effective, as it defaults to running on the top-ranked profiles.

If your talent pool is very large — e.g. more than 5K profiles — consider the suggestions below:

Companies + Industries
I added specific companies but I’m not seeing results from those companies.
You likely have added both companies and industries. The search will then find anyone at either the company or in the industry. Remove industries to search through companies only.
Job Titles
I am seeing profiles with irrelevant job titles.
Exclude job titles using the “not” field in job titles. Consider whether any job titles might be too broad and remove them. You can also use Boolean operators in the Job Title field, e.g. (“Customer Success” AND “Senior Manager”)
Skills
I am seeing profiles who don’t have the skills I need.
Add additional skills in the field, or use the “find similar skills” option. You can also pin skills to make them must-have requirements. This is generally not recommended, as the ranking should already surface top matches.
Funding Stage / Industries
Profiles are not the industry or funding stage I specified.
Check whether those fields are set to “current + past” when you intend them to be “current only”.

I’m looking for X, but I’m getting Y.

First, diagnose your search. Why is Y appearing? You may find a filter that is unintentionally pulling in those profiles, or a keyword that is surfacing them.

Once you have identified the issue, decide on the method to resolve:

  • NOT Fields: in a variety of fields, you can explicitly exclude certain inputs. For example, you can exclude specific job titles, skills, or companies.
  • Additional Filters: add more fields to constraint your search. For example, job title levels can be an effective way to avoid any profiles who are at the wrong level of seniority.

Final option — if none of the above works, you can add more skills / keywords that match who you are looking for. The ranking will automatically prioritize those profiles; so even if the total search pool increases, your top matches will appear at the top. You can then use Autopilot to refine the search further.
